"Flip That Space"

The Best Laid Plans ...

So there I was, I had it all figured out.  Since I didn't have a yard sale customer this weekend, I would use today to do some 'treasure hunting' myself to find something that could spruce up some areas of my townhouse.

I'll be the first to admit that I totally 'suck' at interior decorating - I am blind to things that 'go together' and give a certain 'air' about a room, or 'add a feel' etc, etc.  It may be because of the fact that I love to 'de-clutter'.  Seeing how things could actually be well added to a space escapes me.

Don't get me wrong, I love to see a well-decorated room - it does not need to be fancy or 'rich', just the 'bringing of things together' does it for me.  I love watching A&E's 'Flip This House' - so I used that for inspiration and gave myself a challenge - I would start with little spaces and 'Flip That Space'.

I identified a space and got started.

Wall space/area near the dining area

Why this Space
This space is the focal point when you walk in the living/dining area from the front door.

About the Space
The space is near  a double french door.  The artwork on the wall is 'Avocado' in a gold frame which was given to me by my dear friend; world renowned pencil artist Kim Smith.  I love the artwork, but I think that it may be too small for that space.  So it needs to be relocated to it's own special space.

Justification for the existing look
I thought that the picture went well with the space because the wall is a nice shade of green and the avocados are green - and they are food right near the dining area.  Makes sense right?

Results
No luck at all today.  I found a few nice paintings (more of an African motif), but at $10 - $20, were more than I wanted to spend today for paintings.   I love the African motif, but that is not what I want for this room or this space.

It could be that I limited myself by only looking for a painting.  Perhaps, I can try something else in the space ... Any Ideas?

Garage Sale ... Not GarBage Sale

Something to Sing About?

In my opinion, a shopping experience shouldn't feel like I just ran 'Marathon Bahamas' (believe me, Paradise Island bridges are nothing to play with).  Whether I'm shopping at Tiffany's or at someone's yard sale, the experience should be the same - well, not exactly the same, but both should be a thrill.

What should be the same however is that at both places, I should be able to find treasures.  And by find I don't mean that I should be knee or neck deep (depending on the entry approach) in some cardboard box trying to find that deal that I know is in there somewhere.

'Box Hunting' is not a MUST at Yard Sales

Picturing these types of garage sales made me think about the catchy first line from the song 'Hunting' by Spragga Benz "Hunting, Hunting, Hunting, Haffi find something, something, something..." (of course he was looking for something else, but the passion was there).

The point is that you are not trying to sell your garbage.  Your garage/yard sale should be organized and neat so that shoppers are be able to find what you have to offer.  It should look like a garage sale ... not a garBage sale.  As a shopper, I should not feel like Adele "Rolling in the deep..." mess labeled garage/yard sale.

Sell items that you no longer need or want - but are still in great condition.  If you present your goods like garbage, then people will see it as such and they will not stay and browse.

I think that the concept of garage/yard/patio sales in the Bahamas have gotten a bad name because of what persons try to sell and the way that it looks.

Put items where shoppers can easily find them.  There are many ways to organize or group your items in order to avoid that haunting 'hunting' experience.

Kids items grouped on one table allows an easy find.

Create a good shopping experience for your customers - one that they will 'never forget' and they will 'keep coming back for more'.

 Until next time ...

Just Do It Already

Don't Let Your Money 'Dry Rot'

Some people (especially those with kids) don’t shop every year because they want to, but because they have to.  So it was no surprise when my girlfriend told me that she was not really going on vacation this year, but she did need to shop because “Most of my kids clothes are too small”.   “Sounds to me like it is time for a yard sale” I said.  She laughed in agreement knowing that I was suggesting it for my own excitement.

What surprised me was not that the clothes were too small – the surprise was that she had stored these ‘too small’ clothes away from last year.  “Last year?  What are you waiting for”?

There are many reasons why people won’t get rid of unused stuff or wait to have a yard/patio or garage sale:

-       They couldn’t be bothered with going through the process of preparing for and having the sale (sorting, parting with sentimental items, pricing, organizing, marketing, setting up and the negotiation process)
-       They can’t find the time
-       They don’t think they have enough stuff to sell
-       They don’t think that they will make money

So why are you throwing away money like that?

Having to have to throw away unused damaged goods because you stored them for a later date is like tossing away hundreds of dollars because you put it in your wallet and buried the wallet.  Clothing like paper (and lots of other items ) rots if packed away (unsecured) for long enough.

Nike, was aware of the fact that the pros of ‘just doing it’ far outweighed the cons.  Here are a few reasons why you should ‘just do it’ as it relates to your sale:

-       The process really doesn’t take that long once you get started and work at it continuously until it’s done.  Find a few minutes every day or every few days.
-       Clothes can ‘dry rot’ after time whether they are stored away or hanging in your closet for an extended time if not stored properly.  Elastic and thread in waistbands, sleeves and collars pretty much disintegrate and leave the garment useless.  A similar thing happens to shoes (leather and man made materials), curtains, sheets, towels and the lining of rugs - all of which are big yard sale items by the way.

Beautiful Silk Beaded Dress - Dry Rot

-       Styles change quickly.  If you don’t want to be walking around in clothes from two years ago, neither will anyone else.
-       Batteries left in items such as toys, clocks, radios and electronic devices become corroded over time – leaving the device useless and in need of being discarded.
-       It doesn’t matter how much things you have to sell – if there are only a few items, have a sale only for two hours or arrange to have a sale with a friend or family member in order to bulk up the yard sale.
-       The binding in books is made from thread or glue which dry rot or disintegrate over time and pages are paper which becomes brittle and needs to be discarded.

Don’t wait another week to have that yard/patio or garage sale.  Start planning today – it’s really not that hard.  So – ‘Just Do It”.

Until next time...
